How to Size a Battery Backup UPS for an Aquarium Air Pump or Filter
Add up the watts on your air pump and filter labels, then find that load on the UPS maker's runtime chart. Buy a pure sine wave UPS with enough battery outlets, and leave the heater off the battery side unless the chart shows it can carry it.

The verdict
Choose a pure sine wave UPS, like the listing on this page, and confirm on the maker's runtime chart that your pump and filter load lasts as long as your typical outages.

Start with the air pump
In a short outage, keeping air moving through the water is usually the first priority. A filter matters too, because it keeps water circulating and supports the bacteria living in the media. Put the air pump first on your list and the filter second.
A heater is a different case. Heaters usually draw much more than pumps, so check its label. A heater on the battery side can drain the UPS quickly and cut the pump's runtime. Plug it into a surge-only outlet, or plan to insulate the tank during a long outage instead.
- Air pump: highest priority on battery
- Filter: second priority on battery
- Heater: check its label before you put it on battery
- Lights: plug into a surge-only outlet
Find your real load in watts
Do not guess. Read the wattage on each device's label or power brick, or check the maker's spec page. A plug-in watt meter gives the most honest number, because it shows what the device draws in your setup.
For example, if your air pump label reads 5 watts and your filter label reads 15 watts, your battery load is 20 watts. That 20 watts is the number you take to the runtime chart.
Measure each device separately, then measure them together. Note whether the reading jumps when the filter motor starts.
Read the runtime chart at your load
A UPS rating tells you the most it can carry, not how long it lasts. Runtime depends on your load. Find the maker's runtime chart or calculator and look up your own wattage.
For example, if your load is 20 watts and the chart shows several hours at that load, you are covered for a typical short outage. If your outages often run longer, a larger unit or a second UPS adds time. Some charts do not list very small loads, so contact the maker if yours falls below the chart.
For outages that last a day or more, a portable power station or a battery-operated air pump may serve you better than a UPS.
Why sine wave output matters for pumps
Many aquarium pumps and filters run on small AC motors. Some UPS units put out a stepped, simulated sine wave on battery, and some motors hum, run hot, or stall on it. A pure sine wave UPS avoids that question.
The listing on this page, the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD, is listed as a PFC Sinewave UPS Battery Backup and Surge Protector. Even so, check its spec sheet and runtime chart against your own load before you buy.
Set it up safely near water
Water and electrical gear do not mix. Keep the UPS off the floor and away from the tank, where spills and splashes can't reach it. Give every cord a drip loop, so water runs down the loop and drips off before it reaches the outlet.
Plug the UPS directly into a wall outlet, not into a power strip or extension cord. Test it once by switching off the breaker or unplugging the UPS, and watch whether the pump and filter keep running.
- Plug the air pump and filter into battery-backed outlets, not surge-only ones
- Check that bulky plugs don't block the outlet next to them
- Learn how to mute the alarm before an outage starts
- Note the battery replacement terms in the warranty

How this guide was made
- Drafted and checked with AI. An AI model wrote the draft from the guide's topic. A second AI pass looked for factual numbers to check against web sources. This does not verify every statement. A draft that fails the check is held for review.
- Fact-checked by the HoldBackup editorial team. On , a person on the HoldBackup editorial team reviewed this guide against its sources. That is a review of the writing, not a test of any unit.
- General guidance only. No prices, rankings, or test results, because we have none to back them. Check any number against the maker's own spec sheet.
- No lab tests, and we say so. HoldBackup has not run any unit named here.

Questions
Can a UPS run my aquarium heater too?
Only if the runtime chart shows enough time at your combined load. Heaters usually draw much more than pumps, so check the heater's label first. Adding it to the battery side can cut your pump's runtime sharply.
How long will a UPS keep my air pump running?
That depends on your load and the unit. Measure your pump with a watt meter or read its label, then look up that number on the maker's runtime chart.
Do I need pure sine wave output for an aquarium pump?
It is the safer choice. Some pump and filter motors hum, run hot, or stall on simulated sine wave power. Pure sine wave output avoids the problem.
Will the UPS beep all through an outage?
Most UPS units sound an alarm on battery, and many let you mute it. Check the manual so you know how to mute yours before you need to.
Where does the price button go?
Straight to Amazon. Amazon sets the price and availability, and both can change.
