Running a Gas Range or Oven Igniter from a Portable Power Station
A portable power station can often run a gas range's igniter and controls during an outage, because the gas does the heating. Measure your range's actual draw first. Then buy a unit with pure sine wave output and a continuous rating comfortably above that number.

The verdict
Buy a pure sine wave portable power station, such as the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2, but only after a plug-in watt meter shows that your oven's peak draw sits well under the unit's continuous rating.

Can a power station run a gas oven?
Often, yes. A gas range burns gas for heat, so its electrical needs are limited to ignition, the control board, the display, and the oven light. That makes it a much smaller load than an electric range.
The catch is the oven igniter. Many gas ovens use an electric hot surface igniter that may stay powered while the burner is lit and cycle as the oven holds temperature. That is the part that sets the size of the station you need, and it varies a lot between models.
Plain spark igniters on the cooktop burners usually draw far less, but check your own range rather than assuming.
Find your range's real draw
Start with the rating label. It is usually inside the storage drawer, behind the oven door frame, or on the back of the range. The owner's manual also lists the electrical requirements.
The label gives a maximum, not what the oven pulls while baking. For a real number, plug the range into a plug-in watt meter rated for the load and run a full bake cycle. Note the highest reading during preheat and the average over an hour.
Do this on a normal day, not during an outage, so you can buy the right unit before you need it.
- Peak watts: compare this to the station's continuous AC rating.
- Average watts over an hour: use this for runtime math.
- Watt-hours used per meal: many meters show this directly.
Size the station to your cooking
Pick a unit whose continuous AC rating sits well above your measured peak, not just at it. Running a station near its limit can trip its overload protection mid-bake.
For example, if your watt meter shows the oven used 200 watt-hours over a one-hour bake, a station listing 1,000 watt-hours of capacity could cover several such bakes on paper. Real usable energy is lower because the inverter loses some power, so check the maker's runtime chart at your load and leave a margin.
If you also want to run a fridge, lights, or a router from the same unit, add their measured draws and plan which loads share the station at once.
Connecting the range safely
Most gas ranges plug into a standard wall outlet behind the unit. To reach it, you may need to slide the range out, which can strain the gas line. Follow the manual, move it gently, and have a qualified technician help if you are unsure.
If you need an extension cord, use one rated for the range's load and keep it short and out of walkways. Plug the range directly into the station's AC outlet rather than a power strip.
Keep the kitchen ventilated as your manual directs when using gas burners, and never use the oven to heat the home.
- Turn off the range at its controls before switching its plug.
- Confirm the plug type matches the station's AC outlet.
- Keep the station away from heat, spills, and the oven vent.
- Never bypass a safety valve or igniter to get gas to flow.
What to check on the listing on this page
The Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 is a portable power station with AC outlets you can use for a gas range. Before buying, open its spec sheet and confirm the continuous AC output and the surge rating separately, and compare both with your measured peak.
Check that the output is pure sine wave, count the AC outlets and their layout, and read the runtime chart at a load close to yours. Look at recharge options and the warranty terms too. If your range's peak is close to the rated output, step up to a larger unit instead.

How this guide was made
- Drafted and checked with AI. An AI model wrote the draft from the guide's topic. A second AI pass looked for factual numbers to check against web sources. This does not verify every statement. A draft that fails the check is held for review.
- Fact-checked by the HoldBackup editorial team. On , a person on the HoldBackup editorial team reviewed this guide against its sources. That is a review of the writing, not a test of any unit.
- General guidance only. No prices, rankings, or test results, because we have none to back them. Check any number against the maker's own spec sheet.
- No lab tests, and we say so. HoldBackup has not run any unit named here.

Questions
Can I light my gas oven with a match during an outage?
Usually not. Many gas ovens with electric igniters will not open the gas valve unless the igniter is powered, which is a safety feature. Wolf, for one, tells owners not to light its ovens by hand without power. Some cooktop burners can be lit by hand, but only if your owner's manual says so and explains how. Never try to bypass the valve.
Does a gas range need pure sine wave power?
It is the safe choice. Electronic controls and igniters are designed for clean household power, and modified sine wave output may cause errors, noise, or failed ignition on some ranges. Check that the station's spec sheet lists pure sine wave AC output.
Would a generator be better for running a gas oven?
A generator can run longer on fuel, but it must run outdoors, away from windows, doors, and garages, because of carbon monoxide. A power station is quieter and can sit indoors, which suits short outages and a single appliance.
How long will a power station run my oven?
Divide the station's usable watt-hours by the average watts your oven drew in your watt meter test, then leave a margin for inverter losses. The maker's runtime chart at your load is the best check.
