Choosing a 1500VA Sine Wave UPS for a Home Office
A home-office UPS plan starts with what has to finish together: the computer, displays, network and any storage. Decide which devices belong on the battery and which can stop. A 1500VA label alone does not establish capacity or runtime for your office.

The verdict
Size the full office load and its shutdown sequence before selecting a UPS; consider the APC SMT1500C only if its published limits, connections and runtime meet that plan.

Split essential work from optional equipment
Make a list of the computer, displays, modem or ONT, router and storage used by your work. For each, write whether it must stay on until work is saved, can stop immediately, or needs an automated shutdown when nobody is present.
A laptop may already have its own battery. In that case the network path may be the more useful load to protect. Do not count every item on the desk as essential simply because a UPS has spare sockets.
Check the SMT1500C rating behind the title
APC’s US SMT1500C page uses 1500VA in the title but lists 1440 VA / 1000 W in its product summary. Use the exact unit’s datasheet and label for sizing. APC also lists sine-wave output, AVR and eight outlets. None of those specifications establishes your office runtime.
Keep the combined load within both the watt and VA limits. Compare the runtime chart with the load during the work you actually intend to finish, including any storage that remains on during shutdown.
Choose who receives the shutdown signal
APC lists serial or USB communication with PowerChute Serial Shutdown for this model. Its SmartConnect Ethernet port provides cloud monitoring; APC distinguishes that service from a Network Management Card used with network shutdown software. Do not assume an Ethernet cable automatically arranges shutdown for every office device.
Write down which machine receives the UPS signal and how each other device is protected. Check supported software, connection type and any required accessories before deciding that one UPS covers the office.
Check outlet use and recovery
Match your plug count and adapter spacing to the exact outlet diagram. Confirm any configurable outlet-group behavior before attaching equipment that must stay powered through another device’s shutdown. Follow the manual’s installation and ventilation requirements.
Record the intended restart order after utility power returns. A computer, network device and storage system may have different recovery settings; check each device instead of assuming the UPS restores the entire workflow.
Decide when to use a narrower guide
For one tower and its display, the desktop UPS guide focuses on the PC load and operating-system shutdown. For a NAS, compatibility and storage shutdown need their own check. For only Wi-Fi, use the router and modem guide.
This page is a planning guide, not a claim that a 1500VA-class unit is necessary for every office. HoldBackup has not tested the SMT1500C with your equipment.

How this guide was made
- Drafted and checked with AI. An AI model wrote the draft from the guide's topic. A second AI pass looked for factual numbers to check against web sources. This does not verify every statement. A draft that fails the check is held for review.
- Fact-checked by the HoldBackup editorial team. On , a person on the HoldBackup editorial team reviewed this guide against its sources. That is a review of the writing, not a test of any unit.
- General guidance only. No prices, rankings, or test results, because we have none to back them. Check any number against the maker's own spec sheet.
- No lab tests, and we say so. HoldBackup has not run any unit named here.
- The store link is not a pick for this guide. It goes to a unit in this product class that this guide does not review. Check it against the list above before you buy.
- Labelled store links. A store button goes straight to Amazon with HoldBackup's affiliate tag. HoldBackup counts the click. A live button carries a "paid link" label, and the disclosure sits above the first one on every guide.
Questions
Does 1500VA mean I can connect 1500 watts?
No. Read both limits for the exact model. APC’s SMT1500C US page lists 1440 VA / 1000 W in its summary, despite using 1500VA in the title.
Does SmartConnect automatically shut down every computer?
Do not assume that. APC distinguishes SmartConnect monitoring from shutdown through PowerChute and a supported communication path. Verify the setup for each computer.
Should my modem share the computer’s UPS?
Include it only as part of a deliberate network and shutdown plan. Account for its load and outlet needs, and remember that local backup power cannot keep the provider’s network operating.
Where does the price button go?
Straight to Amazon. Amazon sets the price and availability, and both can change.
