Choosing a UPS Battery Backup for Security Cameras and an NVR

Get a line-interactive, sine wave UPS sized to the combined load of your NVR, PoE switch, and router, with enough battery to cover your typical outage. Add up your real draw first, then read the maker's runtime chart at that load.

The verdict

Choose a sine wave UPS, such as the listing on this page, whose maker runtime chart shows enough minutes at the combined wattage of your NVR, PoE switch, and network gear.

What we check

  • Combined watts of NVR, PoE switch, and router
  • Runtime at your load on the maker's chart
  • Sine wave output
  • Enough battery-backed outlets, not just surge-only
  • Shutdown signaling the NVR can use
  • Replaceable battery and warranty terms

What the UPS actually has to keep running

A camera system only records during an outage if every link in the chain has power. That usually means the NVR, the PoE switch or PoE ports that power the cameras, and the cameras themselves through those cables. If you want to view footage from your phone or get alerts, the modem and router need backup too.

Cameras that run on their own plug-in adapters scattered around the house are a different problem. A single UPS by the NVR will not keep them on unless their adapters also plug into it. Wi-Fi cameras also need the router up to send video anywhere.

  • NVR or DVR, including its hard drives
  • PoE switch or PoE injectors
  • Modem and router, if you need remote access
  • Any camera power adapters located near the UPS

Size it from your own numbers

Do not guess from the box. Read the wattage on each device's label or power brick, check the maker's spec page, or plug the whole setup into a watt meter and read the real draw. PoE cameras pull their power through the switch or NVR, so measuring at the wall captures them too.

For example, if your NVR, switch, and router together read 120 watts on a watt meter, look up 120 watts on the UPS maker's runtime chart and see how many minutes it lists. If that is shorter than the outages you usually get, you need a larger battery or a different kind of backup.

A UPS has both a VA rating and a watt rating. Keep your load under the watt rating with some headroom, and judge runtime by the chart, not by the VA number.

Why sine wave output and outlet layout matter

Some power supplies, especially ones with active power factor correction, can behave badly on a simulated sine wave and may click off or switch modes when the UPS goes to battery. A sine wave UPS, like the listing on this page, avoids that concern. If you choose a different unit, check its output waveform on the spec sheet.

Next, count outlets. Most units split them into battery-backed and surge-only groups. Make sure the battery side has enough spaced outlets for the NVR, switch, and any bulky power bricks.

  • Confirm the output is listed as sine wave on battery
  • Count battery-backed outlets, not total outlets
  • Check outlet spacing for wide adapters
  • Look for a display or software that shows load and remaining runtime

Shutdown, alarms, and placement

If an outage outlasts the battery, the NVR loses power abruptly, which risks corrupted recordings or a damaged drive. Some NVRs can accept a shutdown signal from a UPS over USB or the network, and many cannot. Check your NVR's manual for UPS support before counting on it.

Put the UPS where it has airflow, away from heat and dust, and where you will hear or see its alerts. A closet stuffed with gear can run warm, and heat shortens battery life. If the alarm beep is a problem, check whether the unit lets you mute it rather than unplugging it.

Battery upkeep and warranty

UPS batteries wear out over time, and runtime shrinks long before the unit fails outright. Check whether the battery is user-replaceable and what the warranty covers. Run a self-test now and then, and note the runtime the display reports so you can spot a fading battery.

If you need many hours of runtime rather than enough to ride through short outages, a portable power station or a properly installed generator setup may suit you better than a larger UPS.

How this guide was made

  1. Drafted and checked with AI. An AI model wrote the draft from the guide's topic. A second AI pass looked for factual numbers to check against web sources. This does not verify every statement. A draft that fails the check is held for review.
  2. Fact-checked by the HoldBackup editorial team. On , a person on the HoldBackup editorial team reviewed this guide against its sources. That is a review of the writing, not a test of any unit.
  3. General guidance only. No prices, rankings, or test results, because we have none to back them. Check any number against the maker's own spec sheet.
  4. No lab tests, and we say so. HoldBackup has not run any unit named here.
  5. The store link is not a pick for this guide. It goes to a unit in this product class that this guide does not review. Check it against the list above before you buy.
  6. Labelled store links. A store button goes straight to Amazon with HoldBackup's affiliate tag. HoldBackup counts the click. A live button carries a "paid link" label, and the disclosure sits above the first one on every guide.

Questions

How long will a UPS keep my cameras recording?

It depends on your total load and the battery. Measure your NVR, switch, and router with a watt meter or read their labels, then find that wattage on the UPS maker's runtime chart. That chart, not the VA rating, tells you the minutes.

Do I need to back up my router too?

Only if you want remote viewing, phone alerts, or cloud storage during an outage. Local recording to the NVR works without the internet, but nothing reaches your phone unless the modem and router stay powered.

Will a UPS protect cameras that use their own plug-in adapters?

Only the adapters plugged into the UPS. Cameras powered from outlets elsewhere in the house will shut off in an outage. PoE cameras are easier to cover because one UPS can power the switch or NVR that feeds them.

Can I run a generator to extend the UPS?

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows, because of carbon monoxide. Connecting one to house wiring takes a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician, so ask your electrician which outlet type and setup is safe for your home.

Where does the price button go?

Straight to Amazon. Amazon sets the price and availability, and both can change.
