UPS sizing worksheet
Complete the common checks, then use the section for your desktop, network or NAS. Record unknowns and resolve them with the equipment manufacturer before relying on the setup.
Type in the spaces below, or print a blank copy. Your entries stay in this open page; they are not saved or sent. Reloading or leaving the page may clear them. Use your browser’s Print menu to keep a paper copy or save a PDF before leaving.

Define the job
Purpose: save desktop work and shut down / keep the network connection powered / let a NAS reach its documented safe state.
For a NAS, include the configured outage delay and the time needed to complete its documented storage action. Check the low-battery trigger separately.
Record the connected equipment
Print another copy of this equipment section if your setup needs more spaces. Include every required device in the combined load.
Check the load against both UPS ratings. Watts and VA are different quantities; do not assume they are equal. If the VA check is unresolved, use the maker's sizing guidance or ask the manufacturer.
Use a suitable meter according to its instructions and record the workload behind each reading. An idle desktop reading may miss a demanding workload. A PC power-supply rating or an adapter's DC output rating does not measure wall consumption.
Check the exact UPS
Compare the published estimate with the required duration. Battery age, charge, environment and load changes affect runtime. The curve does not establish runtime for your equipment. If your load is outside its published range, ask the maker; leave runtime unknown rather than extrapolating precise minutes.
Desktop checks
Include the PC, the display needed to save work and any required network equipment in the load.
A USB charging socket does not establish a shutdown data connection. Save your work; shutdown software may not save open documents.
Router and network checks
Map the powered path: modem or ONT, router, and any required switches or access points. Include only the boxes your connection uses.
A powered router does not keep the internet provider's network available.
NAS checks
Supported signaling path: direct USB data / Synology network UPS server / SNMP / another maker-documented path.
Use the instructions for the exact NAS platform and configuration. Synology’s UPS guidance for your DSM version describes Standby Mode: it stops services and unmounts volumes; it does not by itself establish immediate power-off. Its network notification path needs the connecting switch or hub powered. Record the actual path. Keep a separate data backup.
Resolve remaining questions
Follow the exact UPS and equipment manuals. Resolve conflicting instructions with the manufacturers. Do not improvise an outage test by pulling the UPS wall plug.
